“Yorubas have the biggest producers, movies” – Chude Jideonwo
Chude Jideonwo highlights the dominance of Yoruba filmmakers in Nollywood, noting their impact on global platforms like Netflix and the absence of Hausa and Igbo films.
Nigerian media personality, Chude Jideonwo, has sparked a conversation about the dominance of Yoruba filmmakers in Nollywood, claiming that the country’s biggest names in cinema predominantly come from the Yoruba-speaking regions. In a reflective Instagram post, Jideonwo highlighted the significant contributions of filmmakers such as Kunle Afolayan, Toyin Abraham, Kemi Adetiba, Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, and Femi Adebayo, among others, to Nigerian and global cinema.
He emphasized that Yoruba-led productions continue to dominate major streaming platforms like Netflix, where their films are frequently featured and celebrated. According to Jideonwo, the Yoruba filmmaking culture has become a leading force in Nollywood, overshadowing films produced in Hausa and Igbo languages, which he noted are rarely seen on global platforms like Netflix or Amazon.
“The Yoruba filmmakers are the biggest in the industry,” Jideonwo remarked. He pointed out that the cultural integration and storytelling mastery of these filmmakers have led to their widespread success both locally and internationally. Meanwhile, he noted the absence of Hausa and Igbo-language movies, with Genevieve Nnaji's *Lionheart* being the only notable exception in recent years.
