“Wizkid started as a ‘studio rat’, coined the name ‘Wiz'” – Banky W
Banky W shares the inspiring journey of Wizkid, from his struggles as a "studio rat" to becoming one of the biggest global music stars.
Music executive Banky W reflects on how Grammy-winning artist Wizkid rose from humble beginnings to become one of the biggest names in music. In a circulating video, Banky W recalls signing Wizkid to his label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), long before the superstar founded StarBoy Entertainment. He described Wizkid as a “studio rat” who couldn’t afford studio sessions but spent countless hours refining his craft in any studio that would let him stay.
According to Banky, the name “Wiz” was inspired by Wizkid's incredible speed as a songwriter. “Wizkid had no money for studio time, so he’d hang out all day, hoping engineers or producers would give him a few minutes to record,” Banky shared. The artist would prepare hooks and melodies ahead of time, and when his chance came, he’d record in a flash.
Banky explained that this creative process, born out of necessity, turned Wizkid into one of the fastest songwriters he’s ever seen. “He would just start freestyling, creating melodies on the spot, and that’s where the name Wiz came from—his genius at crafting hits in moments. Now, the whole world sings his songs.”
