Wife could face jail time for tearing husband's passport - NIS

The Nigeria Immigration Service Act of 2015 (as amended) states that if proven guilty, a Nigerian woman named Favour Igiebor who tore up her husband's passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport might go to jail.

The NIS disclosed that it had begun an inquiry into the events leading up to the destruction of a man's passport by his spouse, Favour Igiebor, adding that she had been called in for interrogation. NIS spokesman Kenneth Udo characterized Igiebor's actions as against Nigerian law in a statement.

A widely shared video of Igiebor trashing a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos—which was purportedly her husband's—sparked the investigation. In part, the statement from the Nigeria Immigration Service stated, "A video of a female traveler damaging a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos went viral on social media, prompting the Nigeria Immigration Service to open an official investigation. "In the interest of maintaining national security and the honor and integrity of the country's legal instruments, the Nigeria Immigration Service is unwavering in its commitment to respecting the terms of the Immigration Act.”

Igiebor responded to the public criticism of her actions by saying that they were the result of the burden her husband had placed on her. Don't simply focus on the action; you also need to inquire as to what transpired, the woman remarked.
