Nigerian rapper Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, known as Phyno, has shared why he raps in his native Igbo language. Speaking on the “In My Opinion” podcast, Phyno revealed he initially rapped in English but later switched to Igbo to offer something unique to the global audience. Inspired by lyrical icons like 2Pac and Jay-Z, Phyno fused Western influences with his cultural roots.

He explained, “I sell Igbo to the world because it’s something they don’t have.” His upbringing in a highlife-influenced neighborhood also shaped his music and cultural representation.
