Why Nigeria can never be better – Basketmouth
Comedian Basketmouth shares his frustrations about Nigeria’s worsening economy, citing inflation and naira depreciation, and questions government policies.
Renowned comedian Basketmouth recently voiced his frustrations regarding Nigeria's economic struggles, expressing doubts that the country will ever improve. In a candid interview with AFRIMMA, the comedian highlighted the ongoing inflation and the steep depreciation of the naira, which has worsened over the decades.
Reflecting on the past, Basketmouth pointed out that in 1970, the year he was born, one naira was equivalent to one dollar. Fast forward to today, and the exchange rate has skyrocketed to N1600 per dollar. "There was never a time since 1970 that the dollar crashed and went back to what it was," he remarked. "Every time it changes, all you hear is ‘E go better, E go better,’ but it only gets worse."
He questioned the effectiveness of government policies, pointing to recent increases in essential costs like passport fees. “Now, a 100-page passport costs N100,000. It feels like our government wants to make us suffer, so when people want to leave the country, they hike the price of the passport to make more money," Basketmouth observed.
While his words struck a chord with many Nigerians facing similar frustrations, the comedian maintained a sarcastic tone, saying, “It’s not like I’ve given up hope. Maybe one day the country will get better. Let’s all believe in that pipe dream. It’s over.”
His comments sparked a heated conversation online, with many agreeing that the worsening economy has left them with little hope for improvement.
