UK Pastor Tobi Adegboyega Calls Davido a Gospel Artiste, Defends Choice of Performers at Birthday Bash
UK-based Nigerian pastor Tobi Adegboyega sparks reactions by labeling Davido a gospel artiste, explaining his definition of gospel and defending his choice of performers at his birthday celebration.
Flamboyant UK-based Nigerian pastor Tobi Adegboyega has described Afrobeats star Davido as a gospel artiste, redefining gospel as “good news.” He made this statement on the Off The Record podcast while addressing criticisms about inviting secular musicians, including Davido and Zlatan, to perform at his recent birthday celebration.
“Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artiste. Davido is a gospel artiste. Have you heard: ‘Because I stand strong?’” Adegboyega stated.
The pastor emphasized that his choice of performers was rooted in personal relationships. He explained, “Davido told me, ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They’re my friends. I didn’t pay any of them. Zlatan is like a son to me—his kids are my kids.”
Adegboyega dismissed criticisms from traditional gospel musicians, asserting that his events feature friends who have supported him through thick and thin. He hinted at even grander celebrations in the future as his circle of friends expands.
