Two shot dead over revenue collection in Delta market
Two killed in a clash over local revenue control at Ughelli main market, Delta State. Authorities and security forces step in to restore peace as investigations continue.
Two individuals have been killed in a violent clash over control of local revenue at Ughelli main market in Delta State's Ughelli North Local Government Area. The market, jointly managed by Iwhreko and Ekiugbo communities, became the scene of bloodshed when Onome, also known as Oyibo, was shot dead while collecting levies from petty traders. Another victim, Nathaniel, who sustained gunshot wounds, later succumbed to his injuries at Ughelli Central Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated when unidentified individuals confronted Oyibo in the market. Initially, traders intervened to resolve the conflict, but moments later, gunshots rang out, causing panic as traders scrambled for safety. Oyibo’s body was later discovered near the former Eco Bank at Adagharagba junction, while Nathaniel was found wounded and rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Local authorities, including the Ughelli North council chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, have involved security forces to restore order and prevent further violence. "We have deployed the police to take over the area and ensure peace," Egbo stated, while Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, confirmed the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.
The clash has raised concerns about the longstanding rivalry between the two communities over control of the market's revenue, with locals urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent further violence.
