A devastating tragedy unfolded on Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State, as approximately 20 children were feared dead in a stampede at a Christmas celebration event. The incident occurred at Islamic High School, Basorun, during a family funfair that turned chaotic.
The event, reportedly promising gifts to attendees, ended abruptly when a stampede broke out, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries. Survivors were rushed to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where medical teams are working tirelessly to save lives.
Governor Seyi Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a "very sad day" for Oyo State. The state government, through the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the deployment of a rapid response team. Security personnel and medical staff were also dispatched to the venue to restore order and provide emergency care.
While Agidigbo Radio Station, associated with broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, denied organising the event, the state government has pledged to investigate the tragedy and support affected families. Governor Makinde extended his condolences to grieving families, emphasizing the government’s commitment to preventing similar occurrences in the future.
