Speaking on The Receipts Podcast, the singer revealed that the split, which occurred in 2018, came amidst her battle with postpartum depression and intense public scrutiny.
Tiwa recounted how her ex-husband's decision to announce their marital issues online left her vulnerable to public backlash. Despite initially being celebrated as Nigeria’s sweetheart for "doing everything right," including her education, marriage, and motherhood, she found herself the target of relentless criticism.
“When I shared my side of the story, it only got worse,” Tiwa said. “I was told I’d never win because I was a woman. It was heartbreaking.”
The 44-year-old reflected on how the situation transformed her, marking a shift in her public persona. “After doing everything right and still being attacked, I thought, why not just live for myself? That’s when I became the ‘African Bad Girl.’”
