Three-storey building collapses in Rivers
A three-storey building collapses in Rivers State’s Iriebe Community, sparking site closure and an investigation into construction approvals and material quality.
Chaos erupted in the Iriebe Community of Rivers State’s Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Tuesday morning as a three-storey building under construction suddenly collapsed. Although no casualties have been confirmed, workers were reportedly on-site when the building gave way.
Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo, Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, promptly visited the site. According to his Chief Press Secretary, Ofonime Okon, it’s still uncertain if anyone remains trapped under the debris. The Chairman immediately ordered the site’s closure and summoned the building’s owner and site engineer to his office for questioning.
Expressing deep concern, Ihunwo demanded that the building owner provide the necessary approval documents from the Ministry of Urban Development, emphasizing concerns about the quality of materials used. He also stated plans to collaborate with the ministry to investigate whether the construction was approved and compliant with regulations.
