Speed Darlington’s lawyer reveals reason for his rearrest, mentions Burna Boy
Speed Darlington’s lawyers address his rearrest in Nigeria, debunking bail-jumping claims and accusing police of rights violations.
Lawyers representing the controversial music star Speed Darlington have clarified the circumstances surrounding his rearrest by Nigerian police shortly after his return to the country.
The US-based rapper, known for his outspoken nature, was reportedly apprehended after a performance in Owerri, Imo State. This arrest follows an earlier detainment linked to his controversial remarks about Burna Boy, after which he was granted bail.
In a statement issued by his legal team, it was revealed that the arrest stemmed from allegations of bail-jumping. The lawyers, however, insist this claim is unwarranted, emphasizing that Speed Darlington had traveled abroad to address a medical emergency, a situation known to the authorities.
The statement read:
*"We act as counsel to Mr. Darlington Achakpo, also known as Speed Darlington. After his Owerri performance, our client was detained on claims of jumping bail, reportedly at the behest of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau.
For clarity, our client was granted bail on October 5, 2024, following an unlawful five-day detention in Lagos over the Burna Boy controversy. He was due to report back but had to seek urgent medical attention abroad. In consultation with his lawyers and the authorities, he arranged to return upon completing treatment.
It was never his intention to evade justice. This recent arrest is an unnecessary display of force, designed to humiliate and infringe on his rights. Such misuse of police authority must be addressed."*
The legal team is calling for the police to act responsibly and respect the rights of their client. Fans and supporters are awaiting further developments in the ongoing saga.
