Soldiers take over Enugu airport

Soldiers Deploy at Enugu Airport Ahead of Nationwide Hunger Protest

In preparation for the upcoming nationwide hunger protest, soldiers have taken control of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and other key locations. The protest, scheduled to run from August 1 to 10, 2024, has prompted significant security measures.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing has announced that Igbo youths will not participate in the protest. Despite this, our correspondent observed a substantial military presence throughout the Enugu metropolis, particularly those from the Nigerian Army.

At the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Junction along the old Abakaliki-Emene road, numerous military personnel were stationed, equipped with weapons. Additionally, an Armored Personnel Carrier fitted with surveillance cameras was spotted at Abakpa Junction and New Heaven Junction along the Enugu-Abakaliki road.

The heightened security measures are aimed at maintaining order and ensuring the safety of citizens during the protest period. As tensions rise, the military’s presence underscores the government’s commitment to preventing disruptions and safeguarding critical infrastructure.
