Shettima Warns Against Abuse Of LG Autonomy
The vice president said LG autonomy will address financial limitations that have hindered primary education in Nigeria.
Vice President Kashim Shettima highlighted that the recent Supreme Court ruling granting full financial autonomy to local government councils will significantly boost Nigeria’s universal basic education system. Speaking at the launch of a book titled ‘Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria’ by Modupe Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Shettima warned against the misuse of this autonomy. He noted that local governments, which are primarily responsible for providing primary education, will now be better equipped to overcome financial challenges that have previously hindered the alignment of their operations with the government's educational goals.
Shettima also reassured the public that the ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu's administration will address the shortcomings and ideologies that have impeded the advancement of universal education in Nigeria.
In the wake of the Supreme Court's landmark judgment in July, about 15 states have either announced or held local government elections. The ruling mandated that the Federal Government pay the 20.60% monthly allocation of the 774 local governments directly to their exclusive accounts, bypassing state governors' control. Additionally, the Supreme Court barred governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils, further reinforcing the autonomy of the third tier of government.
