Shehu Sani Reveals Huge Amount Senators Earn Monthly

In the midst of an ongoing debate about the salaries of federal lawmakers, former Senator Shehu Sani has claimed that while he was a member of the 8th Senate, his monthly earnings amounted to N13 million. He further asserts that current members of the 10th Senate now receive N21 million each month. This disclosure comes in stark contrast to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission’s (RMAFC) recent statement, which claims Senators earn only N1 million monthly.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, voiced his skepticism about the RMAFC’s figures during an interview on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics. He criticized the commission for what he describes as misleading information, suggesting that the RMAFC’s claims are not reflective of the actual salaries.

“I have first-hand knowledge of the financial arrangements during my tenure, and I can confirm the figures I’ve shared,” Sani stated. “The RMAFC seems to be downplaying the true earnings of Senators. They provide a specific salary figure but then mention an overall amount of N20 million spread across four years, which doesn’t align with what I and others know to be the case.”

Sani also referenced a statement from Senator Kawu Ismaila from Kano, who corroborated his claim about current senators earning up to N21 million monthly. “During my time in the Senate, I was driven by a sense of transparency and accountability. As an activist-turned-lawmaker, I felt compelled to reveal the actual amounts being paid to senators, which were around N13.5 million per month,” Sani explained.

He emphasized the importance of transparency in public office and the necessity for lawmakers to openly disclose their earnings. “Given that legislators are funded by public money, there is no reason to obscure or misrepresent their salaries,” he asserted. “It is crucial for taxpayers and the public to know the true financial aspects of their representatives’ compensation.”
