Sharia Enforcement and Its Community Reactions

The Islamic fasting period, known as Ramadan, began on March 2nd, 2025. This 30-day period of fasting lasts from dawn until sunset and concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. The announcement regarding the start of fasting was made on a Saturday by the Shahi Imam of Chandni Chowk’s Fatehpuri Mosque, along with various organizations worldwide.

In Nigeria, the Islamic community strictly observes this fasting period. However, recently, some individuals have been apprehended in Kano State for failing to follow the fasting protocols. This has led to widespread reactions among the citizens, questioning why someone would be arrested for not adhering to these religious practices. Operatives of the Hisbah Board in Kano State have arrested several individuals for allegedly violating Islamic laws on the first day of Ramadan.

Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, the Deputy Commander General of the Board, has confirmed recent arrests made by Hisbah officers in Kano metropolis. These officers apprehended young men for failing to observe the Ramadan fast during routine patrols.

In addition to enforcing fasting regulations, the Hisbah board arrested approximately 60 individuals for having what it deemed “indecent haircuts,” claiming such styles violate Islamic law and local cultural standards. Furthermore, some commercial tricycle (keke napep) drivers were detained for allegedly allowing mixed-gender passengers to share rides, a practice that the board considers unacceptable.

Dr. Abubakar emphasized that Hisbah will maintain its patrols throughout the month to ensure strict adherence to state Sharia law.
