Sex demands led to my 14-year absence from Nollywood – Actress Jumoke George
Veteran actress Jumoke George reveals her 14-year Nollywood hiatus, sharing how colorism and refusal to exchange favors for roles impacted her career.
Veteran Nollywood actress Jumoke George has opened up about the struggles that led to her 14-year hiatus from the film industry, citing her resilience in the face of colorism and unethical demands.
In a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, Jumoke revealed that her dark complexion and firm refusal to compromise her principles kept her away from roles for over a decade. "Directors would tell me I was too dark for the screen, and I’d tell them to adjust the lighting instead,” she shared, underscoring her pride in her natural skin tone.
But it wasn't just colorism holding her back. The actress disclosed that numerous industry executives pressured her to trade sexual favors for roles. "I stood my ground and vowed that as long as God exists, I’d never bow to such demands. It cost me dearly, as I went three years without a single role,” she admitted.
Jumoke recounted a heartbreaking moment when she learned the full extent of the industry’s stance against her, overhearing a director at Feminine Cafe, LTV 8, candidly admit she’d been blacklisted for rejecting advances. With a heavy heart, she returned home that day and placed her career in God’s hands.
