Senate confirms Kudirat Kekere - Ekun as CJN

The Senate confirmed Justice Kudirat Segun Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Judge of Nigeria (CJN) on the 24th of September, 2024, during a time that was very crucial in the Nigerian judiciary. Her confirmation followed a plenary session, where she was able to seize contentious issues about the reforms of the judiciary and the independence of the judiciary. President Bola Tinubu, who nominated her, had explained that she is very experienced and can also provide leadership. She is the second female lawyer to engage in the esteemed position, succeeding Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who recently retired.

When appearing before the Senate to defend her nomination, Kekere-Ekun said she intends to automate all matters to do with the courts since justice delivery has been slow, she will also introduce virtual hearings which will fast-track cases, particularly the criminal ones. She also focused on the efficacy of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as a step towards depopulation of prison and the provision of friendly solutions to legal conflicts.

She has been well received, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio clear stance by stating that Nigerians should have confidence in her ability to maintain the sanctity of the judiciary in Nigeria. One can expect that Kekere-Ekun’s political leadership will include the direction of judicial reform and the effectiveness in judicial proceedings.
