Sanwo-Olu, Lagos Govt Sued Over $100M Dangote Refinery Land Deal
Lagos State Government faces a lawsuit over Aliko Dangote's claim of paying $100 million for refinery land in Ibeju-Lekki. Plaintiffs seek transparency and compensation for the affected community.
The Lagos State Government has been taken to the Federal High Court in Ikoyi over a $100 million land deal involving business tycoon, Aliko Dangote. The lawsuit, filed by De Renaissance Patriots Foundation and Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum, seeks to compel the state to verify Dangote's claim that he paid $100 million for the land where the Dangote Refinery now sits.
The plaintiffs demand transparency and accountability from the government, questioning why no public statement was made regarding such a substantial financial transaction. They are also calling for a detailed report on the payment, as no compensation was provided to the affected Ibeju-Lekki community, whose land was used for the refinery.
Lead counsel, Barrister Yakubu Eleto, argued that the people of Ibeju-Lekki have suffered for nine years, with no compensation for the loss of their land. He highlighted a past statement from former Lagos governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN), claiming Dangote received the land for free, only for Dangote to later reveal he paid $100 million for it.
The plaintiffs seek an Order of Mandamus to force the Lagos government to release information on the transaction, alleging the community’s livelihoods were destroyed without restitution. The case, registered as Suit No. FHC/L/CS/1603/2024, is awaiting assignment to a judge.
As the case unfolds, it is expected to expose the truth behind the deal and bring long-awaited clarity to the Ibeju-Lekki community.
