The Nigerian House of Representatives has introduced a groundbreaking bill to provide free internet access in public areas, including hospitals, schools, airports, and government offices. The bill, titled *“An Act to Establish the Legal Framework for a Free Internet Access Program in Designated Public Places Across Nigeria,”* was proposed by Mr. Abubakar Kusada, representing Katsina State's Kankia/Ingawa/Kusada Federal Constituency.
This initiative seeks to expand reliable and secure internet access across the country, with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) leading its implementation. Public spaces covered by the law include police and military barracks, transport terminals, and public parks.
Under the proposed law, users will enjoy a minimum speed of 2 Mbps without incurring any fees. The bill emphasizes user-friendly access while addressing potential security concerns, with partnerships encouraged between the government and the private sector to ensure efficient service delivery. If passed, the rollout plan will be ready within a year, aiming to transform Nigeria's digital landscape.
