Public outcry triggers Kenyan authorities to remove Athlete statues
The city authorities of Eldoret, Kenya, removed the sculptures of three athletes after they were widely ridiculed and criticized for being a crudely done "joke" and "embarrassing."
The statues of three athletes have been taken down by the city authorities in Eldoret, Kenya, following widespread mockery and criticism that they were a badly executed "joke" and "embarrassing." The statues were unveiled prior to Eldoret's city status ceremony. On the other hand, locals and Kenyans on the internet claimed they didn't look much like the athletes they claimed to portray. Because Eldoret is located in the middle of the Rift Valley, home to the majority of Kenya's world-class athletes, it is referred to as the "home of champions." Before Eldoret was formally declared a city by President William Ruto, the monuments were taken down throughout the course of the night. This week, the municipality presented a number of artistic creations, including three statues depicting athletes and additional monuments like a milk fountain and a corn cob.
After sharing a picture of a female athlete thought to be Faith Kipyegon, the current world record holder in the 1,500 meters.
A Kenyan on X said, It portrays mediocrity calling it a Faith Kipyegon statue.
Another X user posted a statue of Eliud Kipchoge in the US and Kenya, for comparison.
