Police recover 20 AK-47 rifles from gunrunner in Kaduna
Kaduna Police arrest notorious gunrunner, recovering 20 AK-47 rifles. Suspect confesses to past operations as efforts continue to track accomplices.
The Kaduna State Police Command has announced the arrest of a notorious gunrunner and the recovery of 20 locally made AK-47 rifles. According to the Command's Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, the suspect, Bitrus Gyang from Barkin Ladi in Plateau State, was apprehended during a routine patrol on September 19, 2024, at Buruku Bridge by officers from the Buruku Division.
ASP Hassan revealed that Gyang had concealed the rifles and an empty Type 06 magazine in the trunk of a black Golf 3 saloon car. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a gunrunner, admitting that this wasn’t his first operation—he had transported fabricated rifles at least three times prior.
The police spokesperson also noted that Gyang is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation, and the force is making efforts to apprehend other members of the criminal network.
Commending the officers involved in the arrest, Commissioner of Police Audu Dabigi praised their dedication, reiterating that criminals, particularly kidnappers and bandits, will continue to face intense pressure and have no safe haven in Kaduna State.
