Police identifies The BRT Bus Attackers

The Lagos State Police Command has shed light on an incident that took place in the Orile area, where a group of disgruntled motorcyclists allegedly attacked a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle on Wednesday. The command's spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, provided details in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, emphasizing that the event was not an armed robbery, as some rumors had suggested, but rather a reactionary attack stemming from the seizure of motorcycles by the Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences.

The conflict reportedly began when the task force conducted a raid on commercial motorcyclists who were violating traffic laws by plying the BRT lanes and other restricted roads. This crackdown led to the confiscation of several motorcycles, a move that angered many of the riders. Hundeyin noted that some of the motorcyclists had initially resisted the police, using their influence or positions to try to avoid arrest, but they were ultimately detained during the operation.

In the wake of the raid, a group of these frustrated motorcyclists decided to take matters into their own hands. They quickly mobilized and sought out a target for their protest. Unfortunately, the nearest symbol of the Lagos State Government they encountered was a BRT bus. In a fit of rage, they forced the bus driver to stop. Lacking the courage to drive through the hostile crowd, the driver abandoned the bus and fled, leaving the vehicle and its passengers at the mercy of the irate mob.

The motorcyclists then proceeded to vandalize the BRT, smashing its windows and causing significant damage. While there have been reports that some passengers were robbed during the chaos, Hundeyin clarified that, as of now, no one has come forward to file a formal complaint with the police. "There are claims that some people were robbed in the bus, but nobody has come forward to the police to report that," he stated, urging any victims to come forward so that the incident can be properly investigated.
