The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three officers over their alleged involvement in the tragic death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The incident, which occurred during a fuel hike protest on September 4, 2024, sparked widespread outrage, prompting the transfer of the case to the police headquarters in Abuja.
The dismissed officers, Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, were found guilty of abandoning their post, engaging in corrupt practices, and unlawfully exercising authority in the events that led to the student's death. In an official statement, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed that after a thorough investigation and disciplinary trial, the officers were dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective from October 4, 2024.
The statement further emphasized that the officers will soon face arraignment, with the Inspector General of Police reaffirming the force’s commitment to justice, professionalism, and accountability. The IGP’s leadership, it noted, is dedicated to ensuring that officers maintain integrity, especially in situations involving the loss of life.
Qoyum, a 21-year-old Electrical/Electronic student, was allegedly killed during a protest by students over the fuel price hike, a tragedy that has drawn attention to police conduct and the need for reform in handling civil unrest.
