Police arrest couple over alleged assault of eight-yr-old maid
Edo State Police arrest couple for allegedly assaulting their 8-year-old maid in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City.
The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a couple accused of brutally assaulting their eight-year-old maid, identified as Miss Previous.
According to a statement from the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Joel Iyamu, the young victim is currently receiving medical treatment, while an active investigation into the incident is underway.
The disturbing event is said to have occurred in the Ikpoba Hill area near Benin City, within the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The suspects, who are reportedly the child’s aunt and uncle, allegedly inflicted severe injuries on the girl, who is their niece.
A 1:17-second viral video capturing the aftermath of the assault has sparked widespread outrage. In the video, a voice, presumably of a concerned onlooker, is heard questioning the young girl, “Who did this to you?” To which the girl tearfully responds, “Mummy Gabriel.”
The onlooker, clearly distressed by the child’s condition, continues, “This is abuse. Look at her body—they cut her and then ran to hide in a church. We will drag them out. We’ll burn down the church if we have to. Your job is to hand them over to the police.”
The couple’s attempt to evade responsibility by seeking refuge in a church ultimately proved futile. Thanks to the swift actions of concerned citizens who reported the incident to the Oregbeni Police Division in Ikpoba Hill, the suspects were apprehended and are now in police custody.
This case highlights the ongoing issue of child abuse in Nigeria and the importance of community vigilance in ensuring justice is served. The Edo State Police Command has assured the public that justice will be pursued in this case, and the well-being of the young victim remains a top priority.
