Omoni Oboli explains why she avoids meddling in her son’s marriage
Omoni Oboli shares her approach to respecting her son’s marriage, valuing her daughter-in-law’s independence and healthy family boundaries.
Nollywood actress and director Omoni Oboli has opened up about why she chooses not to interfere in her son’s marriage, respecting her daughter-in-law’s autonomy even when concerns arise.
In a candid conversation on the *Dear Ife* podcast with Ifedayo Agoro, the mother of three shared her perspective on fostering healthy boundaries. Oboli explained that rather than asserting her own views, she tries to put herself in her daughter-in-law's shoes.
Reflecting on her experience of getting married at 21—the same age as her daughter-in-law—Oboli acknowledged her own strong-willed nature at that age, recognizing that her daughter-in-law, too, likely values her independence.
The actress highlighted the need for sons to feel comfortable addressing their mothers on behalf of their wives, reinforcing the balance between family connection and respect.
“There have been times when my son has told me, ‘Mum, Marelle doesn’t like that,’ and I catch myself, realizing I didn’t mean it that way. It’s crucial that children can communicate on their partner’s behalf without fear,” Oboli shared.
“People need to understand that when a child gets married, they’re forming their own family unit. They’re still part of yours, but they now have a family of their own,” she added thoughtfully.
