Olori Naomi and Broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat Charged with Murder After Tragic Stampede
Olori Naomi Silekunola and broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat face murder charges following a stampede in Ibadan that claimed 35 lives, sparking public outrage and legal debates.
Olori Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi and broadcaster Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat have been charged with murder following a tragic stampede that occurred on December 18, 2024, at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The incident claimed the lives of about 35 people.
Court documents allege that Olori Naomi, Hamzat, Fasasi Abdullahi Babatunde, and others still at large conspired to commit a felony termed “acceleration of death,” a violation of Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
Reacting to the charges, Simi Silekunola, Olori Naomi’s sister, voiced her frustration on Instagram, questioning the legal basis for the accusations. “I need lawyers to educate me on why my sister was charged for murder. Since she was detained, the only explanation has been ‘order from above.’ Who is behind this order?” Simi wrote, accusing unnamed parties of harboring personal vendettas against her sister.
The charges have sparked public debates around legal accountability, event safety, and potential misuse of legal authority. The accused are set to face trial as the case continues to unfold.
