Okey Bakassi Advocates for Polygamy, Claims Monogamy Isn’t Working in Africa
Comedian Okey Bakassi claims polygamy is more suitable for Africa, arguing that monogamy is ineffective. Read his thoughts and the growing debate surrounding his statement.
Nigerian comedian and actor Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has sparked debate with his recent views on marriage. Speaking on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Bakassi asserted that polygamy is better suited for Africa, arguing that monogamy is failing in the region.
He explained, “Forget all the lip service we pay to polygamy here. I still think that polygamy is the best form of marriage for Africa. Monogamy is not working. We are pretending.”
Bakassi compared the two systems, pointing out a key difference: “Polygamy says you can marry two people at the same time. Monogamy says you cannot marry them at the same time; you have to let one go. But what if you don’t want to let one go?”
His remarks have sparked widespread conversations about cultural norms and marital practices in Africa, with many weighing in on the complexities of monogamy and polygamy.
