Ogun REC, Niyi Ijalaye Reportedly Slumps, Dies After Abuja Meeting
Niyi Ijalaye reportedly slumped and died on Monday evening in Abuja shortly after attending a meeting of RECs at the Commission's headquarters.
Barrister Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State under the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has tragically passed away. Reports indicate that Ijalaye suddenly collapsed and died on Monday evening in Abuja, following his participation in a REC meeting at INEC’s headquarters.
The cause of his untimely death has yet to be officially confirmed. It is understood that the incident occurred in his hotel room at Bon Octagon Hotel, shortly after he had attended the crucial meeting chaired by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. The meeting addressed significant issues, including the forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as deliberations on seven vacant seats within the National and State Assemblies.
The Ondo-born legal expert had been in high spirits during the day’s proceedings and was even photographed in a blue-striped kaftan and red cap, images of which were shared by the Commission on its timeline. Barrister Ijalaye had taken up the role of REC in Ogun State in March 2022, succeeding Olusegun Agbaje, who was transferred to Lagos State.
Despite the sudden loss, INEC has not yet released an official statement regarding Ijalaye’s death. His passing marks a solemn moment for the Commission as it prepares for upcoming electoral duties.
