Observers Blame Governor Fubara's Supporters for Violence in Rivers State Local Government Elections
Independent observers hold Governor Fubara's supporters responsible for the violence and arson during Rivers State's local elections, urging a federal investigation and resolution
Independent observers say that the recent violence and burning during the local elections in Rivers State was caused by supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, according to an early report by the Independent Election Monitoring Group (IEMG).
The report says that the governor's actions are wrong. It blames him for trying too hard to gain power, which has caused problems, and for not following the law. Emmanuel Agabi, the Executive Director of IEMG, said that Fubara did not pay attention to court decisions and safety issues, which added to the problems after the election.
It also highlighted issues like missing election materials, improper use of voter registers, and early result announcements. While the police faced criticism for pulling out of election duties, IEMG clarified that the withdrawal was based on a Federal High Court order, exonerating them from responsibility.
The report calls for an investigation into the arson, the cancellation of election results, and federal security intervention. It urges Governor Fubara to respect court rulings and engage in dialogue to prevent further unrest. Observers warn that if not addressed, the situation could worsen and impact the state’s democratic stability.
