NYSC DG clarifies that the new N77,000 allowance for corps members is delayed due to the non-release of funds by the government. Staff salary hikes also remain unpaid.
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has stated that the increase in corps members’ allowances hasn’t been implemented yet because the government hasn’t released the necessary funds.
The Federal Government had approved raising the monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024. This was confirmed by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission in a letter dated September 25, 2024, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Despite the announcement, corps members didn’t receive the new allowance in September. Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service, Ahmed explained that the government is yet to release funds for both the corps members’ allowance and the salary increase for NYSC staff, which was approved months ago.

He expressed optimism that the payments will be made soon, though the exact timing is uncertain.
Ahmed also claimed that while the salary of NYSC staff were increased roughly four to five months ago, the rise has yet to be implemented.
“The salaries of our staff members and corps members were raised approximately four to five months ago, but this has not yet been implemented,” he stated. Although we have not yet received the funds, we are optimistic that the new compensation will be implemented soon.
He said, “Not only the corps members, even our staff members’ salary has been increased about four to five months ago, but it has not been implemented yet. But we are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, but the funds have not been released to us yet.
“The information we have did not specify when the new allowance will be paid, but we were assured that their monthly allowance has been increased from 29th July 2024.”
