No evidence Bobrisky slept outside prison during jail term – FG panel
An investigative panel found no evidence that Bobrisky evaded her six-month prison sentence. The probe followed claims of preferential treatment and bribery, which have been dismissed.
An investigative panel has cleared popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, of allegations that she evaded her six-month prison sentence by staying in a private lodge rather than serving time at Kirikiri prison. The accusations, sparked by activist VeryDarkMan, claimed Bobrisky was given preferential treatment due to the influence of a "godfather" and bribed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with N15 million to drop money laundering charges.
In response, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered a full investigation into the matter, leading to the formation of a panel in late September. Uju Agomoh, Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action, presented the findings from phase one of the inquiry on Monday, stating that no evidence was found to suggest Bobrisky spent any time outside the custodial center during her incarceration from April 12 to August 5, 2024.
The panel, chaired by Magdalena Ajani, continues to investigate allegations of corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service, but for now, Bobrisky has been exonerated of the claims regarding her jail term. Agomoh emphasized the thoroughness of the review, which accounted for the usual remissions applicable to her sentence.
