NLC Rejects NBS Unemployment Report, Calls It Misleading and Unrealistic
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the NBS unemployment report claiming a decline to 4.3%, calling it unrealistic and unreflective of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has dismissed the latest unemployment report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), describing it as disconnected from Nigeria’s economic realities. The NBS reported a drop in the unemployment rate to 4.3% in Q2 2024, down from 5.3% in Q1 2024, suggesting improved labor market conditions.
In an interview with The Punch, NLC National Assistant General Secretary, Chris Onyeka, labeled the report a “voodoo document” and accused the NBS of fabricating statistics to mislead the public. He argued that the claim of declining unemployment is implausible, given the widespread closure of factories, reduced consumer spending, and slowing economic activities.
Onyeka also criticized the NBS’s methodology, questioning its accuracy and relevance. He challenged the agency to identify the sectors allegedly driving job creation, asserting, “It doesn’t add up.” He further likened the report to “INEC-style manipulation,” alleging that the NBS has lost credibility in the eyes of Nigerians.
“Nigerians deserve data that reflect the reality of the economic hardship they face daily. Unfortunately, the NBS has failed in its mandate, much like INEC,” Onyeka concluded.
