In order to save their lives during the scheduled statewide protests, Nigerian university students were instructed on Monday by Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman to stay on campus.
In a letter to vice-chancellors of universities, the minister made this known through Chris Maiyaki, acting executive secretary of the National Universities Commission.
A national demonstration has been planned by certain activists for August 1–10, 2024. The hashtags #EndBadGovernance, #TinubuMustGo, and #Revolution2024 are trending on social media, indicating the growing popularity of the planned demonstration.
The Hon. Minister of Education has ordered that the Vice-Chancellors of every university in Nigeria be formally informed about the plan by unidentified groups to stage statewide protests. The Federal Government is cognizant that any Nigerian has the right to peaceful protest, but in the event that there is any sort of unrest, it worries about the security of faculty, students, and university property.
As a result, the Honorable Minister has instructed Vice-Chancellors of all universities in Nigeria to take aggressive measures to guarantee the security and safety of the campus community, which includes faculty, staff, and students.
