Local officials reported that on Wednesday, a small plane in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, went off the runway, killing at least eighteen people.
According to Tribhuvan International Airport spokesman Gyanendra Bhul, the pilot is the only survivor of the Saurya Airlines disaster and is being treated in a hospital. According to police, the 18 Nepalis and the Yemeni national on board were all workers of the carrier.
Thick smoke could be seen billowing from the burning airplane on the airport runway in photos taken by the Nepali police.
Around 11 a.m. local time, the plane crashed during takeoff from Kathmandu to Pokhara, according to Bhul. He said the jet was on its way for technical maintenance.
"As soon as rescue efforts began, the situation was brought under control." the aviation
The accident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with flying in Nepal, which is frequently ranked among the riskiest countries in the world because of a number of factors, including its hilly topography.
There have been several aviation mishaps in the Himalayan nation, which is home to eight of the world's fourteen tallest peaks, including Everest. Because of the abrupt changes in weather, airstrips are usually located in remote, hilly places that are challenging to access.
These challenges increase the likelihood of accidents involving aircraft with 19 seats or fewer, according to a 2019 Civil Aviation Authority safety report.
