Nepal Monsoon floods claim 104 lives, thousands displaced
Nepal’s capital grapples with the aftermath of devastating floods that have claimed at least 104 lives. As residents return home, they face severe destruction from record monsoon rains, with ongoing rescue efforts uncovering further tragedies linked to climate change.
Residents of Nepal’s flood-ravaged capital began returning to survey the destruction after relentless monsoon rains triggered devastating floods, claiming at least 104 lives nationwide. Flash floods submerged entire neighborhoods in Kathmandu, leaving highways destroyed and homes buried under mud.
Kumar Tamang, a resident forced to flee in the middle of the night, described the nightmare: "Water rushed in, and now, mud blocks our doors." Landslides worsened the crisis, burying buses and killing 14 in Dhading district.
Nepal's weather bureau reported 240 mm of rain in 24 hours—the heaviest in over five decades. Emergency response teams deployed helicopters, rafts, and motorboats, rescuing more than 3,000 people. Over 64 remain missing as the search continues.
Experts warn that the intensifying monsoon season, responsible for most of South Asia’s annual rainfall, is being exacerbated by climate change, increasing the severity of rain-related disasters.
