NECO: Abia ranks first, Katsina last in 2024 SSCE
NECO announces the 2024 SSCE results, with 60.55% of candidates scoring five credits, including Mathematics and English. Abia State leads, while Katsina ranks lowest.
The National Examination Council (NECO) has unveiled the results of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), revealing that 828,284 candidates—representing 60.55 percent—achieved at least five credits, including both Mathematics and English Language. This announcement was made by NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dantana Wushishi, during a press briefing at the Council’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
According to Wushishi, a total of 1,147,597 candidates, or 83.90 percent, earned five credits or more, irrespective of their performance in English and Mathematics. Out of the 1,376,423 candidates who registered for the exams, 1,367,736 participated, comprising 702,112 males and 665,624 females.
A notable decrease in examination malpractice was highlighted, with 8,437 candidates reported for various infractions in 2024, down from 12,030 in 2023—an improvement of 30.1 percent. Additionally, the registrar noted that 2,267 candidates with special needs participated, including 1,104 with hearing impairments, 348 with visual impairments, and 342 with albinism.
Wushishi also addressed issues of integrity, revealing that 40 schools across 17 states were implicated in mass cheating, while 21 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to serious misconduct, including negligence and extortion. In a striking case, one school in Ekiti State faced de-recognition for facilitating mass cheating in core subjects.
The state performance analysis showed Abia State topping the chart, with an impressive 83.40 percent of candidates scoring five credits and above, including Mathematics and English. Conversely, Katsina State was identified as the lowest performer, with only 2.42 percent achieving the same benchmark, also trailing in overall credit scores without the requirement for Mathematics and English.
As the results unfold, the focus now shifts to enhancing the examination process and supporting students to achieve even higher standards in the future.
