Mr Macaroni Reignites Human Rights Advocacy Amid Nigeria’s Security Crisis

Popular Nigerian comedian and activist Adebowale “Debo” Adedayo, better known as Mr Macaroni, has once again taken to X to spotlight Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, echoing sentiments from a 2014 post by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

On April 16, 2025, Nigerian comedian Mr Macaroni reignited public outrage by quoting a 2014 tweet from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, then an opposition leader, decrying Nigeria’s “precarious” security situation. The irony stings as Tinubu, now in power, faces criticism for his absence during a deadly wave of violence. On Palm Sunday, April 14, 2025, Fulani militias killed 51 Christians in Plateau State, part of a spree claiming over 150 lives in two weeks. Tinubu, on a working visit to France since April 2, has been urged to return and address the crisis.

Mr Macaroni’s activism is well-documented. A key figure in the 2020 #EndSARS movement, he has consistently used his platform to advocate for human rights, earning the 2022 Civic Activism Award from BudgIT alongside lawyer Femi Falana.

The post reflects growing public frustration with the APC, which has ruled since 2015, as Nigeria grapples with systemic issues like insecurity, economic instability, and corruption, exacerbated by President Tinubu’s policies, such as fuel subsidy removal and Naira devaluation, which have worsened living conditions without clear mitigation plans.

Historical data from the European Union Agency for Asylum (2024) underscores Nigeria’s long-standing security challenges, including farmer-herder conflicts and Islamist violence, which Mr Macaroni’s posts indirectly critique.

However, Mr Macaroni’s advocacy hasn’t been without controversy. On April 12, 2025, he publicly clashed with comedian Seyi Law, who claimed to have kick-started Macaroni’s career. Macaroni dismissed the claims as “mischievous,” accusing Seyi Law of uncivilized behavior during Nigeria’s elections, particularly over political affiliations Seyi Law supported the APC, while Macaroni has been critical of the party. The feud highlights tensions within Nigeria’s entertainment industry amid political divides.
