Manuel Neuer announces international retirement

Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper for Germany, has announced his retirement from international football. The 2014 World Cup winner was capped 124 times, and last month, he played his final match for his country—a quarterfinal loss against Spain in the Euro 2024—having made his debut in 2009 and appearing in eight major tournaments. The 38-year-old goalkeeper for Bayern Munich was named captain prior to the 2018 World Cup, a position he held until that of Ilkay Gundogan earlier this year.

Along with Gundogan's statement this week, midfielder Toni Kroos also declared his retirement from international football following Germany's home Euros. After extending his contract with Bayern Munich until 2025 last year, Neuer will carry on with his club career.
