Man sentenced to prison over N62m land fraud in Lagos
Ikeja court sentences Abodurin Abozo to 8 years in prison for defrauding a man of N62 million over fake land sale, with restitution ordered.
An Ikeja Special Offences Court has sentenced Abodurin Abozo to eight years in prison for defrauding a man of N62 million under the false pretense of selling him two plots of land. Justice Ismail Ijelu found Abozo guilty on two counts: obtaining money under false pretenses and stealing.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) proved that Abozo had fraudulently taken N56 million from Mr. Samuel Segher, promising him two plots of land in Chevy Estate Ojomu, Lagos, despite knowing this was false. After payment, Abozo falsely assured Segher that the land was his. When Segher attempted to take possession, he discovered that the land was already developed. All efforts to recover his money failed.
Justice Ijelu sentenced Abozo to seven years for the first count and one year for the second count, without an option of fine. Additionally, the court ordered Abozo to restitute the full N62 million to the complainant.
The EFCC had arraigned Abozo and his company, SGB &A Property Lines, in October 2023. Though Abozo initially pleaded not guilty, the EFCC presented two witnesses and several documents, including the convict’s extra-judicial statements, which were admitted as evidence.
