Will Jennings, the legendary lyricist responsible for some of the most iconic songs in music history, has passed away at the age of 80. The Texas-born songwriter, known for his powerful and emotionally resonant lyrics, left an indelible mark on the world of music. Jennings’ career, which spanned over five decades, saw him pen unforgettable hits like Celine Dion’s "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic and Steve Winwood’s "Higher Love," solidifying his place as one of the most celebrated lyricists of all time.
Starting his Hollywood journey in 1976, Jennings quickly gained recognition for co-writing Barry Manilow’s “Looks Like We Made It” with Richard Kerr in 1977, followed by the Manilow classic "Somewhere in the Night." His songwriting talent extended across multiple genres, working with artists like B.B. King, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Roy Orbison.
Jennings was also a significant figure in the world of film soundtracks. In 1983, he won his first Academy Award for “Up Where We Belong,” performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes in An Officer and a Gentleman. Another career milestone came in 1992 when he collaborated with Eric Clapton on “Tears in Heaven” for the film Rush, a song that won him a Grammy.
However, it was his contribution to the 1997 Titanic soundtrack that earned him the most widespread recognition. His lyrics for Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” earned him an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and multiple Grammy Awards in 1998, cementing its place as one of the greatest love ballads of all time.
