Lawyer kills orphan in Ebonyi

In a tragic turn of events in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, a legal practitioner named Sunday Ununu has reportedly killed an orphan, Nnamdi Nwite Ugo, during a community election celebration. The incident occurred over the weekend during the festivities for the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney group, responsible for managing land dealings in the area. This group has been actively involved in reclaiming lands they believe were illegally acquired or sold to outsiders.

The community election, meant to appoint new leaders for the group, took a deadly turn when Ununu, the group's counsel, fired celebratory shots into the air. One of these bullets struck Ugo in the face, tragically piercing through his mouth and causing his death.

Ugo, an orphan with no immediate family, was reportedly left without close relatives to advocate for him. The aftermath of the incident has been marked by secrecy and attempts to cover up the tragedy. Allegations have emerged that Ununu’s family and Ugo’s distant relatives are engaged in negotiations, reportedly offering a sum for Ugo’s burial and to suppress details of the incident.

A video of the celebration, which has since gone viral on social media, shows Ununu in a yellow T-shirt, visibly shooting into the air. The footage has sparked outrage and widespread attention.

DSP Joshua Ukandu, the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, has confirmed Ununu’s arrest but noted that the full details of the case are still unclear.
