The recent building collapse on Oriwu Street in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State has resulted in an increased death toll of four individuals. This update was confirmed by Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement released on Thursday.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday, around 4 p.m., when a three-storey building under construction collapsed. Emergency responders retrieved two bodies from the rubble on Thursday morning, while six individuals were rescued amid the chaos.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) provided immediate medical care to the injured, facilitating their transport to Marina General Hospital for further treatment. Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, emphasized the agency’s swift response to distress calls received via the state’s emergency lines.

Upon arriving at the scene shortly after the incident, the LASEMA’s Shark and Eagle Response Teams found two adult males extricated from the debris and six seriously injured, all of whom received necessary medical attention promptly. Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the cause of the collapse was yet to be ascertained and noted that further investigations would be conducted as soon as people are saved.
He said, “LRT is coordinating other common stakeholders for effective response at the incident scene. Agency’s heavy-duty equipment (Excavator) was deployed to the incident scene and is still in operation. Agency’s light and heavy-duty equipment were deployed for the search and rescue operation.”
