After entering a not guilty plea to a charge of driving under the influence, Justin Timberlake’s driver’s license was suspended in the state of New York. On June 18, the pop diva was detained for failing to stay on the right side of the road and running a stop sign. Timberlake, 43, was officially charged with the felony in Sag Harbor, New York, and made a virtual appearance from Europe, where he is now on tour. The 10-time Grammy winner missed his first court hearing last week due to his world tour, Everything I Thought It Was. The court had to hold another hearing because of a paperwork issue to formally charge him with the crime. Timberlake was stopped shortly after midnight in Sag Harbor in the Hamptons, a popular summer destination for celebrities on Long Island. Timberlake’s attorney has denied he was under the influence at the wheel and says the charges should be dismissed. Timberlake wore a black-collared shirt and spoke twice during the virtual court hearing, responding “yes” to the judge’s questions.
According to a charging complaint, Timberlake had “bloodshot and glassy” eyes and “strong odour of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath” when he was pulled over by police. According to the police, he did poorly on sobriety tests and rejected a breathalyzer test. Timberlake allegedly said to the policeman who pulled him over, “I had one martini and I followed my friends home,” Judge Irace allegedly chastised defense attorney Edward Burke for making “irresponsible” remarks to reporters outside of court during Friday’s hearing.
