Joao Felix closer to Chelsea move
Joao Felix, in spite of persistent reports that he would return to Chelsea, is part of Atletico Madrid's squad for the opening La Liga match against Villarreal.
Joao Felix played for Atletico Madrid's team for the first La Liga game against Villarreal, despite continuous rumors that he may return to Chelsea. Despite interest from the Blues, Felix may start for Diego Simeone's team when the La Liga team plays Villarreal.
Following the Portuguese player's stellar preseason play, Simeone has not held back in praising him, saying during a news conference on Sunday that was transcribed by Marca: "He's doing very well." He acts like any other football player in a squad—ready for whatever thrown at him, competing with teammates. Whether or not we can employ him tomorrow will depend on time."
Felix spent two seasons on loan at Barcelona before being shipped to Chelsea in the 2022–2023 season. The Portuguese forward does not appear to be in Simeone's plans for this season, especially in light of Samu Omorodion's failed transfer to the Blues. Felix scored 10 goals in 44 games while on loan at Barca under Xavi last season, and he will be keen to keep accumulating regular minutes to regain his confidence.
When asked about Joao Felix's future in the midst of rumors that he would join Chelsea, Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, was saying "time will tell".
Conor Gallagher's attempted £34 million movement to Chelsea was also derailed by Omorodion's botched move, and there are rumors that Felix may go to Stamford Bridge as part of a deal that would revive the English midfielder's move to Spain. Felix would be a prime choice for the La Liga team to profit from as Atletico cannot afford to sign Gallagher without first selling a player, but Simeone remained unyielding when questioned about the midfielder's potential departure.
