Instagram deletes 63,000 sextortion accounts in Nigeria

The owner of Instagram, Meta, claims to have deleted hundreds of Nigerian accounts that were attempting to extort victims.

Before blackmailing someone, these scammers usually masquerade online as young women to mislead them into sharing sexually explicit content.

Because of the stress, embarrassment, and stigma associated with being conned, several victims of sextortion crimes have committed suicide.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Meta stated that it had eliminated over 63,000 accounts that attempted to interact with the scams.

"Financial sextortion is a horrific crime that can have devastating consequences," it stated.

According to the corporation, it also removed 5,700 Facebook groups where con artists were giving advice on how to con others.
