INEC Warns Governor Seyi Makinde Over Unfounded Allegations During Election Campaign
INEC cautions Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde against making unverified claims about electoral officials, urging responsible conduct in the electioneering process
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong warning to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, urging him to refrain from making repeated, baseless allegations during the election campaign period. INEC emphasized the need for political leaders to promote a fair and credible electoral process, calling for responsible communication.
The warning followed Governor Makinde's recent call during a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Akure, where he demanded the removal of Ondo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Toyin Babalola, simply because of her origin. INEC, in a statement shared on its X account, clarified that Mrs. Babalola is not from Ondo State, as the Commission’s policy prohibits deploying RECs to their states of origin.
INEC highlighted that similar allegations were made by Governor Makinde ahead of the 2020 Governorship election in the state, which were later proven false. The Commission reiterated its commitment to the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, urging public officials to verify their information before making such claims.
