IGP Releases Statement Over Kidnap Of 20 Medical Students
Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police, has described the abduction of the medical students in Benue as a “callous” act.
On Friday, gunmen abducted 20 medical and dental students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos as they were traveling to Enugu for the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students. The incident occurred in Otukpo, Benue State, sparking widespread concern.
In response, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun condemned the abduction, describing it as a "truly appalling, callous, and unacceptable act." The police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement emphasizing the IGP's commitment to rescuing the victims and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“The Nigeria Police Force stands with the victims and their loved ones during this challenging time,” the statement read. “We are committed to ensuring the safe return of the students and to leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of those responsible.”
To bolster the ongoing rescue efforts, the IGP has ordered the deployment of additional operatives and technical resources to support the Benue State Command. The goal is to ensure a swift and effective operation to secure the release of the abducted students.
The IGP also called on the public to assist in the rescue mission by providing any useful information that could aid in the investigation. "Individuals with relevant details are encouraged to contact the nearest police station, the state command control number, or the FHQ via Pressforabuja@police.gov.ng and other available helplines," the statement urged.
