I was very naive at beginning of my career – Tems

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has opened up about her early career struggles, revealing that she was once quite naive in the music industry.

In a candid interview with Glamour Magazine Germany, the "Essence" hitmaker shared that her main focus at the start of her career was simply to create great art, but she quickly realized the importance of learning how to navigate the business side of the industry.

“I don’t want to lie. I was very naive at the beginning of my career – I just wanted to make good art. I had to learn how to navigate the music business in a healthy way,” Tems admitted.

She credited her family and management for helping her stay grounded through it all. “It is both my management and my family that keep me grounded. Especially my mother and my brother,” she added.

Her openness about the challenges she faced offers a glimpse into the journey behind the success of one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
