I did menial jobs, performed for N5,000 to feed my family – Shallipopi
Shallipopi opens up about his struggles before fame, sharing how he worked odd jobs and performed for N5,000 to support his family, including his mother.
Nigerian singer Crown Uzama, widely known as Shallipopi, has shared a candid account of his difficult journey before hitting stardom. The ‘Elon Musk Boys’ crooner revealed that he worked a variety of odd jobs to support himself and his family, including performing at clubs in Benin for as little as N5,000.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Shallipopi responded to critics who slammed him for saying money is crucial for manhood. He recounted his experiences touring Nigeria's 36 states, doing anything he could to make ends meet.
“I’ve been to all 36 states of Nigeria, touring towns just to eat. I don’t know where you’re from, but don’t talk to me about shame. This country doesn’t play with anyone! Period!!!” he wrote.
He continued, listing the various jobs he had taken up: “I’ve done bricklaying, painting, worked in workshops, done POP, plastering work, and even left my house at night to perform freestyle at clubs in Benin just to earn 5k to give my mum.”
Shallipopi’s words offer a raw glimpse into the grind behind his rise to fame, and his defiance against the critics who fail to understand the hardships he’s endured.
