Hollywood actor, Denzel Washington becomes gospel minister
Denzel Washington receives his minister’s license and embraces his faith, sharing his journey of baptism and discussing the challenges of talking about religion in Hollywood.
Denzel Washington, the acclaimed 69-year-old actor, has embarked on a new chapter in his life by receiving his minister’s license, marking a significant personal milestone. The Oscar-winning star was baptized by Archbishop Christopher Bryant at the Kelly Temple in New York City on Saturday, where he expressed his deep faith.
Reflecting on his journey, Washington shared, “It took a while, but I’m finally here… If God can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit.” These words, shared by Bryant, underscored the transformative moment as Washington officially became Minister Denzel Washington.
Bryant celebrated the occasion on Facebook, sharing photos of the baptism and acknowledging Washington’s addition to the clergy, stating, “We celebrate the addition of Minister Denzel Washington into the clergy, having received his minister’s license in the Church of God in Christ today, in a truly uplifting moment.”
While Washington’s career continues to shine, the actor recently opened up about the challenges of discussing religion in Hollywood. In an interview with *Esquire*, Washington expressed how faith is often sidelined in the industry, saying, “You can’t talk like that and win Oscars. You can’t talk like that and party. It’s not fashionable. It’s not sexy.”
The actor, known for his iconic roles in films such as Training Day, Fences, Malcolm X, and The Book of Eli, emphasized that despite the industry's reluctance to embrace open discussion of faith, many in Hollywood do believe. He confessed he wasn’t sure how many other actors share his beliefs but highlighted the personal and transformative power of faith in his life.
Washington, who first made his mark on television with St. Elsewhere in 1982, has since become one of Hollywood's most respected figures. Now, alongside his illustrious film career, he’s ready to embrace his new role in the faith community with humility and devotion.
